As we uplift stories of people supported, Alexander Beam, Coordinator of Community Services (CCS) at Service Coordination, connected with Mike Watson about choice and the freedom to chart his own path.

What makes you unique?

Mike: I am an easygoing gentleman who is kind to others. I am a hard worker who likes to work independently. When I receive a task, I listen and want to complete it without assistance.

How do you overcome challenges in your daily life?

Mike: I overcome it, I persevere, and in the end, I win!

What activities or hobbies bring you joy and fulfillment?

Mike: I enjoy choosing my own activities, like watching television shows without others controlling what I watch. I also like bowling and hanging out with my roommate. We have become like brothers, helping and supporting each other. If he makes the pancakes, then I clean up. We care and look out for each other every day.

Can you share a proud moment or achievement you’ve experienced?

Mike: I am proud that I have moved out to live independently. Doing this has given me the freedom to do the things that I want to do, like getting to see my girlfriend every day. I can live my life how I choose.

What message would you like to share with others?

Mike: Do your best to enjoy your life. You have one life to live, and you should live it to the fullest.

Is there a myth about disabilities that you would like to dispel?

Mike: Just because you are disabled does not mean that you cannot do things. I care for myself at home, including cleaning, taking out the trash, and doing my laundry. Even though you have a disability, you can still do things and live well. It may just look a little different for everyone, but you can do it!
