As we uplift stories of people supported, Allyson, Coordinator of Community Services (CCS) at Service Coordination, connected with Alexa about pursuing her passions.

What makes you unique?

Alexa: It can take me a bit longer to learn or do things than some people, but I am hardworking and never give up, especially if it is something I am passionate about.

How do you overcome challenges in your daily life?

Alexa: I use coping skills and breathing exercises when facing daily obstacles to help me.

What activities or hobbies bring you joy and fulfillment?

Alexa: I love animals, being physically active, and engaging in different activities like swimming with Special Olympics Maryland and playing lacrosse with Shootout for Soldiers. I also love to read books.

Can you share a proud moment or achievement you’ve experienced?

Alexa: A few proud moments for me were passing my driver’s test and getting into the Veterinary Assistant Course for animal care as a part of career training!

Is there a myth about disabilities that you would like to dispel?

Alexa: It doesn’t matter if you have a disability or not, you can do anything anyone else does, it just might take more time. Never give up on your dreams, a disability doesn’t define who you are.
