Melvin’s Story

Melvin is a kind soul who loves his family — and wanted to find a living situation that would allow him to be close to his family without being a burden.

For years Melvin was independent, but he suffered a stroke, which impeded his movement. Complicating matters, during this same period of time he was diagnosed with early onset dementia. With the help of his caretaker Regina and physical therapy, Melvin was able to walk again.

He came to Service Coordination in June 2022 because he needed to find an assisted living facility that was suitable for his needs and checked all of his boxes.

At Service Coordination, we are building a world in which everyone has the opportunity to pursue their ideal life — so we wanted to help Melvin succeed.

Melvin and Regina worked with Tamara, their SCI Supports Planner, to find a home that was perfect for Melvin. He wanted to live near his family, but didn’t want to cause hardship for his beloved sisters. He wanted to have a stable life. He wanted to live independently.

The trio worked tirelessly from September 2022 through January 2023 to find a spot. During this period, Melvin unfortunately lost his brother Sherman, but continued to work with his support system to achieve his goals.

Ultimately, he did. Melvin was thrilled to get his letter of approval — and we at SCI are equally thrilled that we were able to help! In April, Melvin moved into his new home. With the help of his Supports Planner Tamara, Melvin was able to choose the place that was perfect for his needs. He’s still able to visit his family, but can also be self-reliant. It’s the exact situation he had longed for.
